the honest soldier

Music as Pictures - Xavier Stock

Emmy the Great - Creation

And then the child becomes the warrior
And you’re the worrier so worry over this
What’s the thing that has you reaching out to grip it like a phantom limb?

And then the years relay the seasons
You fill the sky, you give him means to lift his chin
And then the tides relay the oceans
You give him reason for believing
That he’s in some creation

It’s pretty much a song about religion, which is one of the most important things in Xavier’s life. And the line “and then the child becomes the warrior” explains almost perfectly how the Chantry turned him into a templar.

PJ Harvey - The Soldier

It’s the year when
Some poet said
“We must love, or accept the
Consequences”
I want you to share
Every pinprick of guilt
That I have felt
That I have felt

Xavier feels guilty about every mage he’s been responsible for, knowing that the Circle of Magi isn’t such a wonderful place or that killing them could have been avoided even though he was under orders. The guilt is so overwhelming at times that he feels like he needs somebody to share it before he cracks.

Coldplay - Green Eyes

I came here with a load
And it feels so much lighter now I met you
And honey you should know
That I could never go on without you
Green eyes

This is pretty much how I see the relationship between Xavier and his apostate friend (who I’ve actually named, so heck yeah for Kate). At least from his point of view. She sees it as something really fun and dangerous, being friends with a templar, but for Xavier, she’s the one person that just takes all of this guilt away from him and makes him feel so much better.

Guster - Lightning Rod

Standing on a building
I am a lightning rod
And all these clouds are so familiar
Descending from the mountain tops
The gods are threatening
But I will return an honest soldier

Steady on this high-rise
Like every lightning rod
And all these clouds are boiling over
Swimming in adrenaline
The sky is caving in
But I will remain the honest soldier

This is more how I think of Xavier through the events of DA2, like towards the end of the game. Everything is going to absolute shit, but he’s determined to stay this ‘honest soldier’ that he’s tried to be for most of his life.

Max Richter - Vladimir’s Blues

[Instrumental]

This song just feels so much like Xavier, I cannot even. Every time I hear it I just imagine him sat alone in the templar barracks, thinking back over the people he’s left and the people he’s lost, the things he’s thankful for and the things he regrets. Just every time I hear it, I get this image of Xavier and it’s wonderful and sad and gorgeous.
